Andre de Beer – Master of Colour and Line

Andre de Beer is a renowned artist known for his mastery in oils and his diverse range of subjects, including landscapes, portraits, still life, seascapes, genre scenes, and figures. Born in 1933 in Potchefstroom, his artistic journey has been marked by significant achievements and contributions to the art world.

From 1964 to 1970, de Beer held the esteemed position of Chairperson of the National Art Society of South Africa. Additionally, he served as a member of the Curatorium of the Pretoria Art Museum, reflecting his deep involvement in the South African art community during that time. His expertise extended beyond his role in these organizations, as he also excelled in education. He held various academic positions at the Pretoria College of Education, including art lecturer, senior lecturer, Head of the Art Department, and Vice-Rector. It was in 1983 that he transitioned into a full-time painter, dedicating himself entirely to his artistic pursuits.

Throughout his career, de Beer’s artistic versatility was evident in his proficiency across various mediums, including oil, watercolor, ink, pencil, charcoal, and pastel. His works have the remarkable ability to capture moments with a sense of immediacy and authenticity, as if freezing a scene in time. This skill is a testament to his deep understanding of his subjects and his ability to convey their essence to the viewer.

One of the aspects that propelled Andre de Beer to fame was his distinct portrayal of “koerantverkopertjies,” a term that can be translated as “newspaper sellers” or “newsboys.” This unique subject matter became his trademark, showcasing his ability to capture the human experience in his art.

In addition to his two-dimensional works, de Beer expanded his creative horizons by sculpting bronzes that centered around his most popular themes. These sculptures have garnered significant attention and demand, highlighting his enduring influence in the art world.

De Beer’s dedication to his craft is evident in his extensive studies. He attended the University of Pretoria from 1951 to 1953, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts. Subsequently, he pursued further education at the Teachers Training College in Pretoria, specializing in art and obtaining a Higher Diploma in Education in 1954. His academic journey continued at the University of South Africa from 1957 to 1960, where he achieved a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts. He completed his studies under the mentorship of Professor FGE Nilant at the University of Pretoria in 1969-70, earning a Master of Arts in Fine Arts.
